Danbury is a city in Fairfield County, southwest of Connecticut, and northwest of Bridgeport. It is one of the fastest-growing cities in Connecticut because real estate is less expensive then in lower Fairfield County. A Metro North station provides rail access to New York City.
The city may have been named for the origin of many of the early settlers, Danbury, Essex in England. Its nickname is Hat City because it used to be a center of the hat industry.
Danbury is the site of a low-security women's prison. There was formerly a men's Federal prison as well, where poet Robert Lowell served six months for conscientious objection in WWII.
